How endometriosis is diagnosed: scans, laparoscopy and what to expect

Endometriosis is diagnosed by a clinician who listens to your symptoms and examines you, often with an ultrasound or MRI scan; a laparoscopy, a keyhole camera procedure, is the way to confirm it.

How endometriosis is diagnosed: scans, laparoscopy and what to expect: your questions answered
Frequently asked questions
Step: A conversation and examination
A clinician asks about your symptoms and may examine your pelvis.
Step: An ultrasound scan
Imaging can show some endometriosis, such as cysts on the ovaries.
Step: An MRI scan
Sometimes used to look in more detail.
Step: A laparoscopy
A camera passed through a small cut in the tummy is the way to confirm it, and tissue can be removed at the same time.
Can a normal scan rule it out?
No. Ultrasound can show some endometriosis, such as cysts on the ovaries, but a normal scan does not rule it out.
What should I bring to my appointment?
A diary of your periods and pain: when it happens, how bad it is, what helps, and how it affects work, study and sex.
How can My Wellness Health help?
There is no single test to request online, so the Pro package (KES 1,000) includes a doctor consultation before and after your check-up to talk through your symptoms, and a care navigator books a gynaecologist or scan where you need one. A care navigator calls you back within 2 hours (Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm) to book what you need at a facility that suits your budget and location.
