Stress is the body's response to pressure. Burnout, as the World Health Organization describes it, is exhaustion, distance from work and reduced effectiveness caused by long-term workplace stress. Long hours and heavy workloads without rest. Little control over your work. Feeling unrewarded or unsupported. Money pressure and caring for others. Not enough sleep or time off.

How is stress and burnout checked?
With the PSS-4 Perceived Stress Scale (4 questions). PSS-4 score 0 to 5: low stress.
What happens after a high-risk result?
A look at what is driving your stress. Practical changes at work and home. A screen for depression and anxiety, which often come with burnout. Counselling if stress stays high. A risk result is not a diagnosis.
What should I ask my doctor?
Is this stress, burnout, or depression? What changes would help most in my situation? Should I take time off? Does my employer offer counselling?

Many employers in Kenya offer counselling through wellness programmes; ask HR.
