Oesophageal cancer risk assessment: common questions

Frequently asked questions

Why does Kenya need this?

Oesophageal cancer is among the most common cancers in Kenya and is usually found late. Knowing your risk factors and warning signs early matters more than for most cancers.

What does it ask about?

Reflux and Barrett's oesophagus, ever swallowing a corrosive chemical, tobacco, cooking over firewood indoors, alcohol, very hot drinks, preserved and smoked foods, fruit and vegetables and activity.

Is there routine screening?

No. Kenya has no population screening for oesophageal cancer, so the assessment points people at higher risk or with warning signs towards an endoscopy.

What does it cost?

KES 300 covers all five cancer risk assessments. Assessment and package fees do not include tests, scans or consultations at the facility, which you pay there by cash, card, mobile money or insurance.
